The Rolling Calf Duppy

The Rolling Calf Duppy is about the worst of the native Caribbean ghosts (duppies) which is often spoken about in Jamaican folklore. This book is written specifically for a 7 to 11 age range, and focus on the ghostly folklore and culture of the Caribbean region. Rolling Calves have much in common with old world shape-shifters and roadside tricksters, and can be found in bamboo thickets and cottonwood groves. The Rolling Calf is one of the worst and most feared duppies in Jamaica, and is known for roaming through town or on lonely roads in the dead of night. Rolling Calves usually appear as a raging black bull with blazing fire for eyes and a chain that it pulls along the ground. It has a long black tail that curls over its back, and very hot flames that shoot out from its nostrils. However, Rolling Calves are afraid of the moon, and will disappear back into the night as soon as moonlight can be seen.

The Ole Higue Duppy

The Ole Higue Duppy is a children’s book specifically targeted towards a 7 to 11 age group, and is about a shape shifting Caribbean ghost (duppy) which is often spoken about in local folklore. It is described as a vampiric old woman who sucks the blood of unsuspecting children in the dead of night. The folklore says that Ole Higues can be seen on the darkest of nights shooting across the sky as they search for their next victim. The Ole Higue has always been known to be a woman, and it is said that she drinks the blood of her victims as they sleep. Her favourites are young children and babies, and during the day she lives among the local villagers as a quiet old woman, but at night she removes her skin and travels across the sky as a ball of fire. So always remember that if you see a ball of fire in the sky at night, it could well be an Ole Higue searching for her next victim.

The Rose Hall Duppy

One of the most notorious duppies ever to haunt Jamaica is the spirit of Annie Palmer, known as the White Witch of Rose Hall. Her legend overflows with magic, voodoo, treachery, love triangles, violence, murder and scandal, all of which are highlighted in this book. The Rose Hall Duppy is a children’s book specifically targeted towards a 7 to 11 age group, and is about Annie Palmer’s duppy (ghost) which is often spoken about in local folklore. After she was herself murdered, Annie‘s body was buried in a tomb on the Rose Hall estate, and a voodoo ritual was performed to prevent her duppy from rising out of the grave. But it failed, and Annie’s ghost can often be seen wandering around the estate plantation. Sometimes she can even be seen riding her big black stallion at night galloping around the estate.
